With summer on its way and the days looking like they’re just about to get hotter, we’re desperately scrambling to get our hands on the best facial sunscreens out there to fight not only the medical effects UV rays have on our skin but also how much it prematurely ages us.

However, the majority of us are ageing our skin each and every day before we even step outside into the sun and now one Australian company is fighting against what they call the ‘silent ager of our generation’ - blue light.

Blue light is emitted from most of the devices we use in our day to day life, such as our mobile phones, our laptops and our tablets and according to Vicki Engsall, the co-founder of Aussie beauty brand, The Jojoba Company, it’s seriously ageing our skin.

Vikki, whose company has released a blue light protection Ultimate Day Cream to combat the effects of blue light, claims that it can create pigmentation and targets collagen and elastin, which in turn leads to wrinkles.

“I think people are now becoming more aware of it because it’s creating the ageing affects no one wants,” Vikki said.

The company are touting blue light at ‘the silent ager of our generation’ because of how much time people are spending staring at their phones and laptops throughout the day.

In a mission to tackle the harm blue light causes, The Jojoba Company’s new moisturiser includes the potent antioxidant fermented algae, which comes from right under the Northern Lights.

“The antioxidants will fight the damage done by blue light. You need a certain antioxidant, you need a certain strength of antioxidants. We put fermented algae in and basically it gives the blue light protection through this active ingredient,” Vikki said.

“So if you put it on your skin in the morning, then you’re protected throughout the day from this blue light damage.”

If you’re thinking that your usual sunscreen probably covers both UV protection and blue light protection, we recommend checking up on the list of ingredients or the description on the back, as very few of them do.

There are other things you can do to protect yourself from blue light, such as turning your phone settings to a dull brightness level and eating more foods which are rich in antioxidant.
