Joel McHale Shares Update On ‘Community’ Movie & Says Donald Glover Is Not To Blame: “It’s My Schedule On This One”

Joel McHale is sharing an update on the Community movie after nearly two years since Peacock greenlit the film.

The comedian also shot down rumors that Donald Glover’s schedule had delayed production in filming and instead took the blame himself.

“If it’s anybody’s fault, it’s my schedule on this one. It’s not his at all. He was available. No, no, no, no,” McHale told GQ about rumors about Glover’s schedule pushing back filming.

McHale continued, “Ok. I will say, and please print this. That was definitely not true. It was not Donald’s schedule. We love Donald. You can fully blame my schedule.”

The actor said the movie hasn’t been shot yet but hinted that it would probably happen in 2025.

“Oh, well, it hasn’t been shot yet. It will be. And I don’t have a definitive update because we thought for a moment it was going to all happen this year, and then it didn’t,” he said. “But we have the money, and that is a huge step. And hopefully, people still want to see it. And Peacock’s paying for it. And so I can’t wait to do it. I’ll say vaguely next year. How about that?”

Earlier this year, Glover told Deadline he had been receiving a lot of hate on social media, with some people believing he was holding the film back.

“It’s happening but I don’t know when. I swear, it’s happening,” Glover told Deadline. “Everybody is hating on me on the internet and it’s not me! They’re like, ‘We know that you’re the reason.’ Maybe I was last year — maybe — but not this time.”

The rumor that Glover’s schedule had delayed the Community movie stemmed from a March McHale interview where the actor joked about why the film hadn’t been shot yet.

“I really do think it’s happening this year, and probably next week. It’s basically working around Donald’s schedule,” he joked.

Created by Dan Harmon, Community is a comedy series set at a community college that ran for 110 episodes across six seasons between 2009 and 2015. It first aired on NBC before moving to the now-defunct Yahoo! Screen for its final season.
