Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt are planning the next phase of their lives.

The married Bachelor in Paradise stars sat down with PEOPLE in December to offer an update on where they see themselves settling down now that they’ve been married for two years. While they're currently residing in New York City, the couple reveals they are looking to move to a different state.

“We love New York and it's been an amazing two and a half, almost three years there,” Pitt, 27, explains. “We just don't know if it's going to be our forever place as we take steps into our next chapter of marriage and life. So we think that maybe it's time to make a hard decision.”

Amabile, 38, explains that there are a few cities they have in mind, but there are pros and cons to each.

“The cons are I'm from Chicago, Serena's from Toronto, and we both are from cold cities,” he laughs. “So that is the biggest con.”

“If we're going back and forth and it's like we travel from cold to cold,” he continues, joking: “I would love it if Serena was from Miami and then we did that!”

While Pitt agrees she’d rather move somewhere with warm weather because “that would make everything a lot easier,” their top pick is likely Chicago unless they decide to stay in New York.

“We're just trying to figure out where we're going to go next,” Amabile says.

The pair, who met on season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise in 2021, also opened up to PEOPLE about their relationship since getting married. They initially tied the knot at a NYC courthouse in 2022, but had a big wedding ceremony the following year for their family and friends.

“Married life is great,” Amabile says.

“Pretty easy, which I feel like is a good sign,” Pitt notes. "We were already living together and we don't have a kid. It's fun!"

As for what makes things so smooth, Pitt says she doesn’t have a clear answer. If she had to give one piece of advice, however, it would be not to overthink things.

“I can't speak to 20 years of marriage, but we're a year in, and I just think having fun,” she shares. “It doesn't have to be that serious. Have fun together. Enjoy life, enjoy your relationship.”

Aside from signing some paperwork and realizing they should “maybe have a will,” Pitt says she thinks it would have been concerning if marriage changed the dynamic of their relationship in major ways.

“The hope is that things stay as easy and effortless as they were before you get married,” she says. “And they have, so that's great.”
