Jimmy Fallon Nails 2 Troubling Points About Trump Phone Call With Putin
Jimmy Fallon cast a jaundiced eye Tuesday on the phone call between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. (Watch the video below.)
“Both sides said the call went well, which makes sense because they’re both on the same side,” the “Tonight Show” host cracked.
“Russia actually described the call as historic and epic,” the comedian continued. “And nothing makes me feel safe like a happy Russia.”
Fallon’s skepticism was supported by a New York Times report that the call accomplished nearly nothing despite the hype from both countries.
The war, started by Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, has dragged on for more than 3 years.
Putin’s reported agreement to a 30-day freeze on infrastructure strikes (as opposed to a 30-day general cease-fire) and a prisoner exchange “was spun as a concession to Mr. Trump” by both countries, the Times wrote. But “all were goals that the Kremlin has pursued and seen as advantageous in the past.”
No wonder the talk show host didn’t appear to give the conversation much credence.
Joked Fallon: “The White House said Putin agreed to a partial ceasefire ― at least they think he did. It was tough to hear on the phone with Elon’s kids playing tag in the background.”
