Jennifer Love Hewitt has a number of acting credits to her name, including roles in the '90s series Party of Five and the procedural drama 9-1-1 (currently airing on ABC). But some folks may remember that the Inheriting Magic author dipped into the supernatural world for a time on TV, portraying Melinda Gordon on the CBS scripted drama Ghost Whisperer.

Initially airing back in 2005, the show followed a young woman who discovered she had the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. As she tried to live a normal life as an antique store owner and loving wife, she also helped spirits cross over into the next world by helping them resolve whatever problems they left on Earth after their deaths. The show was an immediate success, and what's more, it featured a well-known cast of actors including Camryn Manheim, Aisha Tyler and Jamie Kennedy alongside Jennifer.

Since fans loved seeing the show on TV week after week, many were surprised when CBS axed Ghost Whisperer after five seasons in 2010. So, what really happened to cause the show to get cancelled?

Unfortunately for fans who watched Ghost Whisperer at the time, CBS chose to cancel the show after five years on the air due to low TV ratings. Even though Deadline reported at the time about a chance for the show to move to ABC (since Ghost Whisperer was owned by both CBS and ABC), ultimately the network passed on bringing it to life for a season 6.

"After five wonderful seasons and over 100 episodes, we are disappointed to announce Ghost Whisperer will not be returning for a sixth season," executive producers Kim Moses and Ian Sander said in a statement at the time. "We've had an incredible experience and owe a debt of gratitude to everyone involved."

Even though it's been almost two decades since Ghost Whisperer first aired on TV, fans still ask about if there's a chance for a reboot to happen. Well, Jennifer did share her thoughts about a Ghost Whisperer reboot — and it sounds like she'd love to step back into Melinda's shoes again if given the chance.

"I loved it. It was one of my favorite jobs," she said on an episode of the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast in December 2023. "Melinda Gordon, hands down, one of my favorite characters I've ever played, if not my favorite, today. I would love to do it."
