Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck entered into a romantic partnership — for the second time — with the best intentions.

After news broke of Lopez's recent divorce filing, a source who knows both Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, tells PEOPLE they "really loved each other — and it happened quickly."

"They were really going to give it a try, and they did," adds the source. "These are two people who are in love with love, and who wouldn't jump into that? And the world wanted it."

Multiple insiders confirmed to PEOPLE on Aug. 20 that Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in Los Angeles County Superior Court on the second anniversary of their Georgia wedding celebration, which they held one month after their private Las Vegas nuptials in July 2022.

The source also tells PEOPLE that Affleck and Lopez, who filed for divorce without an attorney present, are "very different people."

"She's super public and wants to go out, and he's more of an introvert and is happy to hang out at home," the source says.

Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance in April 2021 — years after they first dated and became engaged, before postponing a planned September 2003 wedding and splitting in January 2004.

Following the news of Lopez's divorce filing on Tuesday, a source told PEOPLE that the Atlas actress "tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken."

Lopez spent much of the summer apart from Affleck but saw him at least as recently as last week, when he celebrated his 52nd birthday on Aug. 15. She was spotted departing Affleck's rental home that day.

Lopez's decision to file her divorce paperwork without a lawyer marks a move that's both unusual and indicates she "just wanted to get this done" and move forward, a legal expert told PEOPLE.

Marilyn Chinitz, matrimonial partner at Blank Rome LLP, said of Lopez filing pro se, "I think that she most likely just wanted to get this done, [that] there was a lot of hesitation and hemming and hawing back and forth, and it's a statement: 'I'm moving forward, I'm filing and I'm doing it on my own.' "

Affleck did not show "any commitment and interest" in making the marriage with Lopez work, one source told PEOPLE, adding that Lopez is "very disappointed and sad" that Affleck "hasn't given her any signs that he wants to continue their marriage."
