Jenna Ortega Says She and Winona Ryder Are 'Mentally Intertwined' with Their 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' Outfits (Exclusive)
The 21-year-old actress tells PEOPLE that she and Ryder didn't plan their matching looks at Venice Film Festival
Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder have a bond like no other.
The actresses, who star together in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, had a sweet — and totally unplanned — matching moment at the Venice Film Festival.
At the film's U.K. premiere in London on Thursday, Aug. 29, Ortega, 21, told PEOPLE that she and Ryder, 52, didn't discuss their coordinating tulle ensembles for the film festival the day prior. Ortega's sheer red Dior Haute Couture gown, which nodded to a dress worn by Ryder's Lydia Deetz in the original 1988 film, just so happen to match the Stranger Things star's black Chanel skirt suit.
"We didn't even talk about it," Ortega said of the homage. "No, I don’t know if she noticed but it was funny because, we didn’t talk about it all, but we both were wearing tulle skirts so it's kind of fun that we were mentally intertwined and we didn’t realize it."
The duo, along with the rest of the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cast, kicked off the 81st edition of the film festival by posing side-by-side.
Ortega's gown consisted of a heart-shaped top and pleated bottom which revealed her platform sandals. She accessorized with a Bois de Rose necklace, bracelet and rings in white gold, pink gold and diamonds of Dior Joaillerie as well as a matching red makeup look.

Ryder's Chanel ensemble, meanwhile, featured a cropped blazer and vest with contrasting buttons, a white button-up shirt and a floor-grazing skirt.
The Wednesday actress' look seemingly referenced Ryder's character Lydia Deetz's red wedding dress from the original film.
Throughout the film's press tour, Ortega and her stylist Enrique Melendez put together several other looks that nod to the original Beetlejuice.
Her multiple striped ensembles while out and about in New York City earlier this month take inspiration from Michael Keaton's iconic costume as the titular character.

She also stepped out in an outfit that paid homage to the final look Ryder wore in the 1988 movie.
Ortega's Thom Browne look, which consisted of a navy blue sweater and plaid skirt, was nearly identical to Ryder as Deetz. She also carried a Handbag for the Recently Deceased, designed by Ozias, which references the spooky handbook from the original movie.
