'Fame is a curse': James Blunt defends Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

They’ve known each other since they served in the Army together and now UK singer James Blunt has defended his friend, Prince Harry, after he made the decision to quit the royal family with his wife, Meghan Markle.

Appearing on the Today Show this morning, entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins asked the You’re Beautiful singer how it feels to have family who are part of the British aristocracy and knowing people, like the royals, who are constantly making headlines around the world.

“I guess the main thing I always think of is that they are just regular human beings too,” James said.

“So I think these kind of people live extraordinarily publicly as they are and yet struggle with it because it's incredibly tough to be under such scrutiny throughout the whole time.

“Fame is a curse. I think if I were to choose everything and advise anyone, I would be rich and anonymous.”

James Blunt, who is married to Sofia Wellesley, the granddaughter of the 8th Duke of Wellington, has previously been candid about his friendship with the Duke of Sussex.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain in October 2019, the Brit Award winner called out the ‘bullying’ Prince Harry and Meghan Markle received since marrying.

“Him I know from the Army. He's a very nice man, a really phenomenal soldier, who does a lot of work for other people, for charities, for veterans, for Sentebale charity, for children in Africa, and I think under great scrutiny they seem to try a lot for other people,” James said.

“So the vitriol seems a bit like leaning on bullying to me.”

James Blunt and his wife, Sofia, were also guests at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s May 19th wedding at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle in 2018.
