Why Ivanka Trump was called out for this photo of her son on a fishing trip

A happy photo of Ivanka Trump’s young son has been bitterly contrasted with images of migrant families who were tear-gassed at the U.S. border.

On Friday, the first daughter tweeted photos of her five-year-old son, Joseph, (whom she shares with husband Jared Kushner) on a family boating trip, writing, ‘Fishing with my favorite angler!’

Two days later, the Washington Post reported U.S. border control agents sprayed tear gas into a crowd of 500 migrants — including young children — who arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in Tijuana, with the photo causing a political divide.

Ivanka’s photo of her son was retweeted by some and included references to the use of tear gas, which Trump officials claim was necessary after migrants allegedly threw ‘projectiles’ at U.S. Border Control agents, reported the Washington Post.

Others connected the photo’s blue skies and sparkling water to the climate change crisis.

On Friday, a report by Trump’s administration stated that the earth’s temperature is rising, in part due to human efforts, posing serious hazards to air, food and water.

“I don’t believe it,” Trump said Monday, according to CNN, admitting that he had only read a portion of the findings.

Trump also pointed to the contribution of “dirty” countries, not including the U.S.

Ivanka was also called heartless for sharing a joyful family moment during a politically charged time.

This isn’t the first time Ivanka’s family moments have been seen as tone deaf.

In January 2017, when she tweeted a photo of herself wearing a silver Carolina Herrera dress days after the president issued an executive order banning people from several Muslim-majority countries, the $5,000 designer price tag was called tacky.

More than a year later when many immigrant children were kept in U.S. detention facilities, separated from their families and covered with foil blankets, the dress had it’s own sarcastic “Who Wore it Better?” moment.

And in May, when Ivanka tweeted a photo of herself hugging her youngest son, Theodore, during the height of family separations at the U.S. border, the first daughter was called complicit in light of asylum-seeking parents who yearned for their children.

On Monday, Melania Trump fared no better.

She tweeted a video of the extravagant Christmas decorations at the White House after Sunday’s confrontation at the border and the president’s claims that many migrants coming from Mexico were “stone cold criminals.”

In return, the first lady was insulted for the glittery details — specifically, the scarlet-hued Christmas trees, which were equated with the color of migrant bloodshed on social media.
