Inside Out 2 just achieved another incredible milestone.

The Pixar sequel exceeded box office expectations and officially became the biggest animated movie of all time, surpassing Disney's Frozen 2.

As of July 24, Variety reported that Inside Out 2 earned $1.46 billion globally, six weeks after its theatrical release on June 14. For comparison, Frozen 2 earned $1.45 billion when it was in theaters back in 2019.

The latest box office achievement comes only weeks since Inside Out 2 officially became the biggest film of 2024 and surpassed Dune: Part Two on July 1. Inside Out 2 also became the first film to surpass the $1 billion mark since Barbie's theatrical release back in July 2023.

Inside Out 2's incredible success also comes off the heels of Pixar's disappointing box office performance of their films over the last few years.

Pixar’s 2022 film Lightyear — a spinoff on Buzz Lightyear’s character from the Toy Story series — and the 2023 original film Elemental both performed poorly at the box office and led the animation studio to rethink their ongoing strategy.

In a July 11 interview, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Doctor told Time that “I think we overestimated the audience's nerd level of being like, ‘Oh, that kid in the first Toy Story bought a toy, and it was based on a movie. And this is that movie.’ That's probably a few layers too deep.”

"If [Inside Out 2] doesn't do well at the theater, I think it just means we're going to have to think even more radically about how we run our business," Doctor continued. "So far Pixar has built a business around pretty large budgets. It allows us to make a lot of mistakes and take risks, and if it doesn’t work, we can still go back and fix it."
