"The King of Swing and former Lord Mayor of Unley who opened for Frank Sinatra at Sanctuary Cove has sadly passed away yesterday surrounded by his beautiful loving family.

"Denis was the consummate entertainer who lit up every room with his charm and style.

The singer's music career spanned over fifty-years, after he started performing in his early 20s, and founding the Adelaide Big Band in In 1971.

He was also Mayor of affluent South Australian neighbourhood of Unley for three years. Denis Sheridan performed in public for the last time in March, at a tribute show held in his honour.

Hugh opened up just last week about how his father had gone into palliative care.

“He’s gone into palliative care with cancer,” Sheridan told the West Australian at an Amazon Prime Video event in Sydney.

“It’s been hard for all of us. We were planning to get married on New Year’s Eve, but I want Dad to be there, so we’re not sure.”

The former Packed to The Rafters star had also previously said how learning of his dad’s terminal illness prompted him to propose to boyfriend Kurt Roberts.

Hugh popped the question at the Adelaide Film Festival back in March, getting down on one knee during Kurt's stage show Hughman, before turning to the crowd and announcing, “I just got engaged!”

"I do know very much in my heart he is a perfect partner - a good person to balance me out. I just knew he was the right one," Hugh told The Sunday Mail the morning after the proposal.

The couple have been together since around Christmas after meeting at a Sydney party in November last year, though they initially opted to keep the budding romance quiet.

It was just after the actor had opened up about his sexuality in a raw and honest essay for Stellar Magazine, after years of keeping his personal life extremely private.

Being with Kurt was Hugh's first publicly gay relationship and first romance in four years. He officially confirmed his relationship in January.
