It’s just as versatile.

We all know the importance of a good pair of pants, whether it’s classic jeans or sleek trousers. They’re staple pieces that look good with everything in your closet: simple white T-shirts, work-appropriate blouses, and going-out tops. But I’m going to let everyone who doesn’t love a restrictive pair of pants in on a secret: There’s another option, and Hilary Duff just gave a masterclass in styling it.

While the actress was in New York City to promote her new children’s book, she wore a look that I can only describe as “winter mermaid.” She had blonde, loose waves, a chunky charm necklace, and she wore not one but two shades of seafoam green. On top, she opted for an oversized blazer, while she went with my favorite pants alternative on the bottom: a sexy slip skirt.

Silk and satin slip skirts have been a long-time staple for a reason; like your favorite pair of jeans or trousers, they go with everything and instantly elevate wardrobe basics. Duff’s outfit was a perfect example of how to dress up the slinky skirt, pairing it with mesh heels and a trendy blazer that would be perfect for everything from a work event to a dinner date. But, as other stars have proven, there’s also the option to dress the style down while still maintaining its elegant edge. Kelly Ripa once paired hers with sneakers, a tucked-in tee, and backpack. Despite everything else about her outfit being totally casual, she still looked remarkably chic — that’s the power of the slip skirt

It’s that versatility that makes the style a year-round essential. Kendall Jenner showed it to be a summer staple when she paired it with a white tank top and loafers, while Duff’s demonstrated how to make it more fall-ready. Personally, I’m obsessed with how the skirt looks in winter, especially paired with classic black boots and a sweater (and this velvet option from J.Crew is *chef’s kiss*).

Slip skirts are fashion’s secret to always looking put together — they make everything in your closet feel a tad more chic while providing comfort your pants simply can’t. Shop more styles inspired by Duff’s look below:
