Lost premiered on September 22, 2004, and immediately captured the imaginations of viewers with its mix of mystery, sci-fi, romance, and smoke monsters. The ABC drama followed the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 after they crash-landed on an uncharted island full of dangerous secrets.

Not since Twin Peakswhich creators Damon Lindelof, Jeffrey Lieber, and J.J. Abrams cited as inspiration — had a network show ignited so much water cooler speculation. “Twin Peaks influenced a lot of Lost. Easter eggs. Characters having secret motivations. A massive ensemble. These were not revolutionary ideas. Certainly not for soap opera,” Lindelof told Entertainment Weekly in 2017. “But when Lost came along, there weren't really any shows on the air that were doing 14 series regulars.”

The series came to an end after six seasons, 51 Emmy nominations (including a 2005 win for Outstanding Drama Series), and years of rabid internet fan speculation. While the finale was divisive, and the show’s behind-the-scenes drama has left a complicated legacy, it still remains an iconic part of television history.

Read on to see what the SAG-winning Lost cast, once named EW's Entertainers of the Year, has been up to in the two decades since their final battle with “Smokey.”

Matthew Fox (Jack Shephard)

Matthew Fox played the de facto leader, Dr. Jack Shephard. Jack was originally intended to die in the pilot — back when Michael Keaton was envisioned for the role. Instead, the character was a mainstay anchor for the Lost ensemble until the bitter end, where he saved the island in the finale.

''Redemption is always a big theme for me, so I had waited a long, long time for that moment for Jack,'' Fox told EW in 2011 about the completion of Jack’s arc. ''He had made so many mistakes and fallen apart and become this shell of a man and was really lost. And to finally get to play that end… felt good.''

Prior to Lost, Fox was best known for Party of Five (1994–2000). During his time on the island, he costarred in Smokin’ Aces (2006), We Are Marshall (2006), and the Wachowskis’ Speed Racer movie (2008).

After the series ended, Fox stepped away from television. In 2011, he appeared on stage in London’s West End for In a Forest, Dark and Deep. He went on to costar in the military drama Emperor (2012), was unrecognizable as the villain in Alex Cross (2012), and appeared in the Western-horror hybrid Bone Tomahawk (2015). Fox resurfaced in Peacock’s limited series Last Light (2022). He’ll soon star opposite Michelle Pfeiffer in the Yellowstone spinoff, The Madison.

Fox has been married to Margherita Ronchi since 1992. They have two children.

Evangeline Lilly (Kate Austen)

Evangeline Lilly was a complete unknown when she became an overnight star as outlaw Kate Austen, a role that earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

She told PEOPLE in 2021, "I cringe watching every single episode of the first two seasons… Because it was my first acting gig ever, and I really didn't know what I was doing, and I was so bad in so many moments."

The actress later landed a role in Best Picture-winner The Hurt Locker (2008) before graduating to the Hugh Jackman-led Real Steel (2011) and Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy as the elven archer Tauriel, one of the few characters created specifically for the films. Lilly doused herself in Pym particles to play Hope van Dyne, a.k.a the Wasp, in Ant-Man (2015), reprising the part in three MCU sequels. Elsewhere, she starred in the comedy Little Evil (2017) and the indie drama South of Heaven (2021).

In 2024, she announced on Instagram she was retiring from acting: “Stepping away from what seems like the obvious choice (wealth and fame) can feel scary at times, but stepping into your dharma replaces the fear with fulfillment. I might return to Hollywood one day, but, for now, this is where I belong.”

Lilly married hockey player Murray Hone in 2003 and got divorced in 2004. She notably dated her Lost costar Dominic Monaghan from 2004 to 2007 before linking up with her current partner, Norman Kali, in 2010. They have two children together.

Josh Holloway won a 2009 Saturn Award for his turn as con man Sawyer.

''God, it was just magical,” he reminisced to EW in 2011. “That's where I got my first home, got married, had my first child. The things that happened there in Hawaii were phenomenal.”

The former model first grabbed MTV viewers’ attention as the backpack-snatching thief who gets his butt kicked by Alicia Silverstone in the 1993 Aerosmith video, “Cryin’.” He made his TV debut six years later in the Angel pilot and continued to guest star across TV until making his mark in Lost.

After the show, Holloway traded Sawyer’s criminal past for roles on the other side of the law. He played spy games in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) and CBS’ Intelligence (2014), then played an FBI agent in Paranoia (2013) and a DEA agent in Sabotage (2014). He reunited with Carlton Cuse for the sci-fi drama Colony (2016–2018). The actor recently had a recurring role as rancher Roarke Morris on Yellowstone and will soon portray a getaway driver in the 1970s-set Max crime-drama Duster.

Holloway married Yessica Kumala in 2004. They have two children. He also periodically reunites with former costars Perrineau, Kim, and Cusick on Instagram.

Terry O’Quinn won an Emmy for his performance as the stoic man of destiny, John Locke.

When Lost premiered, O’Quinn was a familiar face thanks to 24 years of onscreen work, including Silver Bullet (1985), The Stepfather (1987), The Rocketeer (1991), Tombstone (1993), Primal Fear (1996), and Old School (2003). No stranger to television audiences, he also played lengthy guest roles on JAG (1995–2002), The West Wing (2003–2004), and J.J. Abrams’ spy thriller Alias (2002–2004), plus a semi-regular spot on Chris Carter’s Millennium (1996–1999).

"I understand what Lost was and I count my blessings,” O’Quinn told EW in 2014, “I’m usually happy to talk to people. I don’t think I’ve ever had anybody say anything negative to me about it except ‘I didn’t get the ending. What the hell was that all about?’ And I’m like, talk to Damon Lindelof!”

After Lost, he headlined 666 Park Avenue (2012–2013) and remains a mainstay on the small screen, having appeared in everything from Castle Rock (2018) to Hawaii Five-0 (2011–2018). He costarred in Steven Conrad’s Patriot (2015–2018), then reunited with the writer-director for Perpetual Grace, LTD (2019) and the stop-motion puppet noir Ultra City Smiths (2021). The veteran character actor recently played the villainous Major General Beale in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (2024).

O’Quinn was married to Lori O’Quinn from 1979 to 2010. They have two sons, Oliver and Hunter.

Jorge Garcia played the show's heart: the kind, funny, and resourceful Hurley.

Prior to Lost, Garcia’s most high-profile roles were a recurring arc on Becker (2003–2004) and a guest spot on Curb Your Enthusiasm (2004).

''That first summer that we were shooting the show, we knew we were doing something different,” he told EW in 2011. “We had an episode that was half in Korean with subtitles, and we [said], ‘People aren’t doing this on TV right now.’”

After the Lost ended, Garcia appeared on the cover of Weezer’s 2010 album Hurley, then went to another dangerous island in Alcatraz (2012) alongside Sam Neill. The actor played Steve Wozniak in iSteve (2013) and appeared on Once Upon a Time (2012–2013) before joining Lost costar Daniel Dae Kim on Hawaii Five-0’s fourth season. He remained on the procedural until season 10, and later reunited with Henry Ian Cusick on MacGyver (2021).

Garcia recently costarred in Rob Zombie’s The Munsters (2022) and booked another main role in the comedy series Bookie (2023–present).

In 2019, he married actress Rebecca Birdsall.

Yunjin Kim starred as the caring, brave Sun-Hwa Kwon.

"I was worried about representing the Asian community because it was a sensitive topic," she told EW in 2022. "Back in 2004, believe it or not, I was told [she and Daniel Dae Kim] were the first two Asian series regulars on an American show."

Born in South Korea and later raised in New York, Kim had her first breakthrough in the hit Korean action film Shiri (1999) alongside Choi Min-sik (Oldboy) and Song Kang-ho (Parasite). She went on to star in Yesterday (2002) and Ardor (2002) before introducing herself to American audiences on Lost.

Kim later starred in the ABC soap Mistresses (2013–2016), then returned to South Korea for Ms. Ma, Nemesis (2018), based on Agatha Christie’s work. The actress continues to headline Korean films, including House of the Disappeared (2017) and Confession (2022). She has since joined Money Heist: Korea (2022) and plays a recurring character on XO, Kitty (2023), a spinoff of the rom-com To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018).

Kim has been married to Park Jeong-hyeok since 2010.

Daniel Dae Kim played the hot-tempered Jin-Soo Kwon, husband to Yunjin Kim’s character Sun-Hwa Kwon.

"I'd never seen a relationship like that on television before: two nonwhite characters, speaking predominantly in a language that was not English, on prime-time TV, and having that be something the average American could get behind and ship," Kim told EW in 2022.

Like his onscreen wife, he was born in South Korea and raised in the United States. He made his screen debut in American Shaolin (1991) and guest starred on Angel (2001–2003), ER (2003–2004), and 24 (2003–2004). He also landed minor parts in movies like The Jackal (1997), Hulk (2003), the Best Picture-winner Crash (2004), and Spider-Man 2 (2004).

Post-Lost, Kim led the Hawaii Five-0 reboot (2010–2017) but left after season 7 following a salary dispute. He has continued to work on the big screen, appearing in Hellboy (2019), Always Be My Maybe (2019), and Joy Ride (2023).

After lending his voice to The Legend of Korra (2012–2014), he starred as Fire Lord Ozai in the live-action version of Korra’s precursor, Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024). Kim was an executive producer on the medical drama The Good Doctor (2017–2024), based on a South Korean series. This fall, Kim is returning to Broadway — having previously earned rave reviews for The King and I — to play the lead role in Yellow Face.

He has been married to Mia Rhee since 1993. They have two children.

Naveen Andrews earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his turn as the resourceful, romantically tormented Sayid.

The London-born actor had been working steadily before Lost. He had an early lead role in Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996) before romancing Juliette Binoche in the Best Picture-winner The English Patient (1996). He appeared with Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron in Mighty Joe Young (1998) and took on the Mr. Bingley equivalent in Bride & Prejudice (2004) opposite international superstar Aishwarya Rai. While shooting Lost, he appeared in Planet Terror (2007) and Neil Jordan’s The Brave One (2007) alongside Jodie Foster.

Andrews has continued to work on TV, including in Sinbad (2012), as Jafar in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (2013–2014), and in the Wachowskis’ metaphysical epic Sense8 (2015–2018). He returned to ABC for Instinct (2018–2019), earned acclaim as Sunny Balwani in The Dropout (2022), and appeared on The Cleaning Lady (2022).

Andrews and Geraldine Feakins were in a relationship from 1985 to 1991 and have a son. He was with actress Barbara Hershey off and on from 1998 to 2010, and in 2005 had a second child, with actress Elena Eustache.

Harold Perrineau played single father Michael Dawson.

He landed on critics’ radars in the drama Smoke (1995), earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination, and experienced small-screen stardom in HBO’s prison drama Oz (1997–2003). He was the ill-fated Mercutio in Romeo + Juliet (1996) and part of the main ensemble of The Best Man (1999), a generational touchstone that has since spawned a sequel and a miniseries. Before booking his fateful passage on Oceanic Flight 815, he was in Zion for The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003).

"I will endlessly be proud of being part of [Lost]," he told EW in 2022. "I know people did not like Michael, and to this day, I'm confused, like Michael didn't kill his dad. He didn't set fire to his mom's house. He wasn't a con man. He was a dude who had a son that got taken away from him."

Perrineau remains in high demand. He appeared in 28 Weeks Later (2007), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Sabotage (2014), Snitch (2013), and the Jennifer Aniston charmer Dumplin’ (2018). The bulk of his work has been on television. He guest starred on Sons of Anarchy (2012), Constantine (2014–2015), and The Rookie (2019–2021). He also enjoyed main cast roles on From (2022–present) and Claws (2017–2022), for which he received an NAACP Image Award.

Michael Emerson won an Emmy for his role as Ben Linus, the slippery, devious leader of the Others.

The veteran stage actor had netted his first Emmy win for a guest stint as a serial killer on The Practice (2000–2001) and was equally creepy in Saw (2004).

After Lost, he reunited with J.J. Abrams for the thriller series Person of Interest (2011–2016) and had a guest arc on Arrow (2017–2018). He also voiced the Joker in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (2012) and Brainiac on My Adventures With Superman (2023–present). The actor starred in the miniseries The Name of the Rose (2019) before pivoting to the delightfully twisted Evil (2019–2024).

Emerson has been married to actress Carrie Preston, who played Ben's mother in a season 3 flashback, since 1998.

Dominic Monaghan played former rock star Charlie, who suffered the show’s most iconic death.

"People will come over to me on the street and they've written, 'Not Penny's Boat' on their hand or people will tell me that it was their favorite character,” Monaghan told PEOPLE in 2022. “I was happy to be involved in a show that, for a while there, was the biggest TV show in the world."

He got his start on the BBC’s Hetty Wainthropp Investigates (1996–1998), then made his big screen debut in The Lord of the Rings (2001–2003) trilogy as the mischievous, courageous hobbit Merry Brandybuck.

After Lost, he played the electric powered mutant Bolt in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and later produced and starred in the nature documentary series Wild Things With Dominic Monaghan (2012–2016). Henry Ian Cusick earned an Emmy for his role as the castaway Desmond.

He built an extensive theater résumé and starred as Jesus in The Gospel of John (2003) before landing his breakout role on Lost.

“I always thought we could have done another season,” Cusick told EW in 2011. “There were still some other things we could've gotten out of it. I was one of the few that didn't want it to end. I miss being with those people on the beach or on the set.”

After Lost, he guest starred on Fringe (2012) and landed a recurring arc on Scandal (2012–2015) as Olivia’s (Kerry Washington) former right-hand man. He was in Marvel’s Inhumans (2017), then moved on to play Marcus Kane on the CW’s The 100 (2014–2019) for six seasons. Cusick has also appeared on Big Sky (2022–2023) and NCIS: Hawai’i (2023–2024).

In addition to Resident Evil (2002), Blue Crush (2002), and S.W.A.T. (2003), she found a signature character in Letty in The Fast and the Furious (2001).
