With the second season of The Rings of Power releasing on August 29 on Prime Video, it's time to brush up on all things hobbits, orcs, and elves. J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved universe has graced the screen for years with numerous adaptations detailing the happenings of Middle Earth.
Here's how to watch all of The Lord of the Rings films and series in chronological order:
1.The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Set thousands of years before the events of Frodo Baggins, The Rings of Power follows the rise of Sauron during Middle Earth's Second Age. As Sauron's evil sets chaos in motion, Galadriel and others are determined to fight for peace.
2.The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
During The Third Age of Middle Earth, we meet Bilbo Baggins, a homebody hobbit who doesn't want to leave his house. As fate would have it, Bilbo finds himself aiding a band of dwarves to reclaim their home from a menacing dragon. He also happens upon a very strange magical ring...
3.The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Picking up where The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey left off, The Desolation of Smaug chronicles Bilbo and company encountering the great beast, Smaug. As the story continues, it's clear that other dangerous forces are looming, including a vile orc lord and a dark force called The Necromancer.
4.The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
In the culmination of The Hobbit trilogy, the dwarves reclaim what is rightfully theirs under the Lonely Mountain as war ages between good and evil. Men, dwarves, and elves come together to defeat Azog the orc's army and Bilbo returns to The Shire to resume a peaceful life.
5.The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
About 77 years after The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo leaves the ominous ring obtained decades earlier to his young cousin, Frodo. This sets the events of The Lord of the Rings in motion, with Gandalf the Grey tasking Frodo with the perilous journey of destroying the ring. A fellowship made up of elves, men, wizards, dwarves, and hobbits come together to help Frodo.
6.The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
With the fellowship separated and Frodo and Sam left to their own devices, the two hobbits are set on making their way to Mount Doom. The Two Towers follows the band of characters, now each on their own journey to aid in defeating the evil that has reigned across Middle Earth.
7.The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
In the final installment of The Lord of the Rings, we see the ring destroyed, Sauron defeated, Aragorn crowned as the rightful king of Gondor, and all of the hobbits safe and sound. Peace in Middle Earth has finally been restored!
