More About Eating On the Run

Last week was hectic. I found myself rushing to attend early meetings or to catch a plane, all the while looking for a healthy meal I could eat on the run without utensils.

A surprisingly difficult task, considering that the National Restaurant Association tells us that more Americans are eating out and more restaurants are expanding their offerings to include "to go," low-calorie, low-fat, and high-fiber options.

But never fear - the following suggestions will help you find a healthier meal the next time you are pushed for time and looking for something quick:

  • For a breakfast alternative, consider a whole-wheat bagel or granola bar.

  • An 8-ounce serving of juice or a piece of fruit can add vitamins and fiber.

  • If you can only find fast food, read the menus at a couple of places before you decide. Some options are healthier than others.

  • If you don't see them posted, ask to see the nutritional analyses of the meals.

  • Consider a deli-style establishment that can honor special requests.

  • Keep a supply of instant soups or oatmeal at the office. They're quick and will help curb your appetite until you can get a proper meal.
