A group of psychologists at Oakland University conducted a study to determine whether individuals who had stayed friends with their ex possessed psychopathic personality traits. A sample of 861 people was examined, and the results provided some interesting insight into people’s post-relationship motivations.
The research team put participants under the microscope, and asked them to list the reasons they’re friends with their exes. This was done in conjunction with a personality questionnaire that’s intended to single out personality traits that form the dark triad. These dark triad personality traits include narcissism, machiavellianism, and psychopathy.

Naturally, individuals that owned up to practical reasons for staying connected to their ex were given a clinical assessment of narcissism or psychopathy. If this is anything to go by - it might be safer to keep your ex at arm's length, and protect yourself against being a stepping-stone for their personal gain.
Whilst, some individuals had honourable intentions with their ex partner, most participants presented ulterior motives. Exes embraced opportunities to trade money, maintain sexual relations, casual affections, and embrace prospects.
If you were ever in doubt about burning bridges with your last flame, think again. You made the right call.
