Gone are the days of deleting an ex’s phone number and throwing away old photos to make it like the relationship never happened.

In the internet age, it can sometimes feel like you can never escape an ex after a breakup but Facebook have just made it easier.

They’re offering additional privacy settings if you change your status from ‘in a relationship’ to ‘single’. Not only can you easily hide posts from your ex and prevent Facebook from suggesting their name when you tag photos, you will also be able to limit what your ex sees about you and delete yourself from their posts and photos.

Currently only available to Facebook mobile users in the US, the tools are still in the testing phase. If popular, it probably won’t be long before you can erase your ex completely from your social media. It doesn’t however offer any help in real life dilemmas like sharing custody of pets or mutual friends.

It is a gentler, perhaps friendlier, way to navigate a breakup online, but we think simply clicking ‘unfriend’ makes a stronger statement.
