Woman Gives Birth to 6.8kg Baby

Last month, a woman in Perth gave birth to a six-kilogram baby – but a new-mum in India just managed to top that by giving birth to a girl weighing 6.8 kilograms!

Nandini, who only goes by her first name, delivered via caesarean at a hospital in Southern India. She reportedly had no idea she’d be welcoming such a big baby – and neither did her astounded doctors.

“In my 25 years of experience, I have never seen such a big baby,” said Dr Venkatesh Raju, the local health officer. “She is a miracle. I believe she is not only the heaviest baby born in India but the heaviest baby girl ever born in the world.”

Puzzlingly, there seems to be no conceivable reason for the large size of Nandini’s baby. Typically, women with diabetes or thyroid issues tend to give birth to bigger babies due to their irregular sugar levels – but Nandini has neither condition.

”She does not have any health issues like irregular sugar levels or thyroid and is breathing well,” said Dr Poornima Manu, the gynaecologist who delivered the baby. “We were initially concerned about her sugar levels but that is normal. The mother had made regular visits for check-ups at the hospital and never showed signs of gestational diabetes or thyroid disorders.

“She came as a big surprise for all of us. The surgery took place for nearly half an hour and it was free of any risk. She is really big and beautiful."

Nandini and her new addition will stay in hospital over the next few days as doctors try to work out why her baby is so big, but for now, they're confident of her health.
