When one US woman woke up from a four-month coma, it was a miracle. Little did she know, she had another miracle waiting.

Sharista Giles, 20, was five months pregnant when a car accident left her in a coma in December. Her family were originally told she may never wake up, but on Wednesday April 8, the young mother opened her eyes.

“The doctors were telling us there was nothing else they could do,” Giles’ aunt Beverly Giles told ABC news. “They already gave up hope. We never gave up. She’s fought this hard.”

In January, doctors were forced to deliver the baby, known as Baby L for now, prematurely. Weighing less than one kilo when he was born, Baby L is now at a healthy weight and doing well at the University of Tennessee Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit.

According to the Facebook page created by the family to support Sharista and her baby, she was shown a picture of Baby L when she opened her eyes. “She has had her eyes opened all morning n still has them open…She is not communicating yet but this is a great start!”

While it’s too soon to know whether Sharista, who was moved to a rehabilitation centre in March, is suffering any health implications, her family hope to bring Baby L home soon.
