US scientists may have just created the best of both worlds – a leafy green with more nutrients than kale, with the taste of bacon.

Researchers from Oregon State University have patented a new type of seaweed which they believe could be sold commercially as the next major superfood.

Because who doesn’t want their kelp to taste like bacon?

Scientists said the smoky, bacon flavour comes from a new strain of marine algae called dulse – resembling red lettuce, it’s contains high levels of protein and other minerals.

“Dulse is a superfood, with twice the nutritional value of kale,” said Chuck Toombs, one of the researchers developing the product.

While dulse is not available for human consumption, the team believe it could be the next big player in the nutrition market. And if it tastes like bacon, sign us up.
