Bring back the 38-hour work week!

“I’m stuck at work”, “I’ve just got to send this email” and “You put the kids to bed, I’ll be late”.

They’re the all-too-common catchphrases of Aussies around the country and now a report has called to restrict work to 38 hours a week – not just to maintain our sanity, but help tackle gender inequality.

The report, released by the Work and Family Policy Roundtable, aims to cut back on work hours, and balance the role of men and women – with women often taking on “casual and insecure” part time jobs so they can be flexible for their families.

“When women become mothers they tend to work very short part-time hours. As soon as a man becomes a father his hours of work go up,” Professor Sara Charlesworth told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“The rationale for putting a cap or limit on full-time hours is a way of evening out the distribution of paid and unpaid work.”

Whatever the rationale, actually leaving work on time sounds pretty good to us!
