According to a new study conducted by the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, eating a plant-based diet can actually add four years to your life.

Before you shake your head, rest assured that the researchers investigated 1.5 million people in order to reach the conclusion. Their theory? That death from ALL causes was higher for those who regularly eat meat.

"This data reinforces what we have known for so long - your diet has great potential to harm or heal,” said Professor Brookshield Laurent, from the department of family medicine and clinical sciences at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine.

"This clinical-based evidence can assist physicians in counseling patients about the important role diet plays, leading to improved preventive care, a key consideration in the osteopathic philosophy of medicine".

In addition, researchers also reviewed 500,000 people with a very low meat intake, and found they were up to 50 per cent less at risk for all-cause mortality.
