Sleep app reveals world’s snoozing habits

Researchers analysed data from Sleep Cycle app users in 47 countries between June 2014 and March 2015 and discovered that Monday morning in South Africa is the earliest wake-up time worldwide.

Meanwhile Switzerland has the biggest change on Mondays, rising 24 minutes earlier than its weekly wake up average time and Germany is a close second with a 23 minute earlier rise time.

The Sleep Cycle app tracks user’s sleep patterns as they go through different sleep phases and identifies these sleep phases by tracking movements in bed.

Data gathered from app users revealed that the best sleep quality worldwide occurs on a Wednesday night, with fifty eight of the countries surveyed saying they had the most sleep on this day.

While China recorded the highest sleep quality in the world, Americans were found to rise at 7am on Tuesdays and be their grumpiest all week.

Other countries that wake up in a bad mood on Tuesdays include Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and Brazil.

But despite waking up moody on Tuesdays, by Friday the US sleeps in the most and wakes up happiest.

Not surprisingly, 71 per cent of users wake up in the best mood on Saturdays, with 90 per cent of countries sleeping more on Saturday compared to any other day of the week.
