More blokes turning to plastic surgery in a bid to beat their “man boobs”

It’s not often you’d hear blokes and breast surgery in the same sentence, however in the UK, the number of men booking in to reduce their “moobs” is on the rise, the Daily Mail reports.

New figures released by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show that male breast-reduction surgery cases have increased by more than 50 per cent in the last five years. In 2011, 790 men went under the knife to remove excess tissue growth from their breasts.

Experts indicate the boost in “moob” operations is due to a number of factors, particularly the country’s growing obesity problem, and increasing rates of the hormonal condition, gyaecomastia.

Most commonly developing during adolescence, gyaecomastia can also occur later in life, with reports indicating it affects at least 30 per cent of older men in the UK. The condition occurs as a result of an imbalance in the sex hormones, testosterone and oestrogen. It can also result as a side effect of some medications, such as cancer drugs, antidepressants and some heart and liver pills, which can affect the level of male hormones in the body. The use of anabolic steroids in males can also lead to gyaecomastia.

The hormonal condition is the most common reason for male breast-reduction surgery.
