Men are not far behind, with their optimum age to shed the kilos being 31.

The findings are a result of a poll carried out by diet company Forza Supplements on 1,000 male and female slimmers.

The 30s, according to 80 per cent of the slimmers polled, are a ‘watershed’ moment because they want to feel fit and healthy when they leave their 20s.

Over half of the slimmers believe that people are less likely to stick to their diets in their earlier years because of a partying and drinking lifestyle.

In contrast, the likelihood of becoming a mother, getting married and losing the baby weight - events that commonly occur for many women in their 30s - are all seen as incentives to stick to a diet plan.

Men’s ideal age is closer to 30 because for them, turning 30 is seen as a bigger watershed moment that it is for women.

Those in their 30s and 40s, however, are not so bothered about their appearance as ageing takes its toll and they embrace middle age, according to 54 per cent of those polled.
