'He couldn't shout for help': Boy tragically mauled by neighbour's dog

A young deaf and mute boy who could not call for help has reportedly been mauled to death by a neighbour’s pit bull in South Africa.

Luqmaan Jardien, 3, who was born to deaf parents, was alone with the neighbour’s dog in his home in the South African city of Cape Town when the tragedy happened on Monday morning.

The animal had then reportedly dragged the boy into the garden and had its jaws around his throat when his uncle, named as Dawood Stuart, tried to save him from the attack.

A woman, who asked not to be named, reportedly saw the scene first and then notified Stuart.

"I looked out the bathroom window and I saw Luqmaan lying there and the dog was busy biting him in the neck,” she said.

Daily Voice reports that the boy's family did not hear Luqmaan's cries because he could not speak.

"We didn't hear anything because he is mute like his parents. He couldn't shout for help,” a relative said.

The uncle said he scooped up the severely-injured boy and tried to get back inside the house, but the dog kept attacking.

Stuart said the pit bull had the boy in its jaws at the entrance and refused to let go so relatives used the door to asphyxiate the dog.

He added that the pit bull was “fine on other days” and that the youngster would play with it during the afternoons.

Stuart presumed that the animal must have been “somehow provoked”, adding that the boy’s parents have been left “devastated”.

A friend of the family said that the three-year-old was faintly breathing inside the house, but was later pronounced dead in hospital.

“It’s very sad, because we don’t even know if the child could call out for help,” a police spokesperson said.

It is unclear if the incident is still under investigation.
