Halo 3: ODST has been rereleased for Windows and PC

PC gamers rejoice! Halo 3: ODST is finally out on PC.

On Sept. 14, Microsoft announced Halo ODST would be coming to Windows as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection for PC, an anthology of all the Halo titles released thus far except Halo 5: Guardian. The PC ports for the games in the MCC have been launched on a rolling basis, and now on Sept. 22, Halo ODST is live on PC.

The release date also marks the game’s 11th anniversary. When Halo ODST was first released on Sept. 22, 2009, for the Xbox 360, it was met with mixed reviews but ultimately considered a landmark entry for the franchise.

Halo ODST was the first Halo title (Halo Wars aside) starring a protagonist who wasn’t the Master Chief. In fact, the protagonist wasn’t even a Spartan. Instead, you were the Rookie, the latest addition to an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper squad tasked with defending New Mombasa during the Battle of Earth.

Halo ODST was a big departure from the first three Halo games. Unlike the genetically enhanced Spartans who stood over 7 feet tall and could race across the battlefield at 40 miles per hour, the ODST were unmodified humans who only had their training and their wits. In gameplay, this translated into the player being slower, weaker (you couldn’t jump as high as a Spartan or melee as hard) and having to rely much more on stealth to survive firefights.

It was also a fresh perspective for the Halo franchise. The game is a rain-drenched noir story. As the Rookie, you essentially play a detective trying to track down the separated members of your squad after a botched drop. This aesthetic is also reflected in Halo ODST’s jazzy soundtrack, another first for the series.

In the Halo universe, the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers are famous for always being the first in the fight. For me and many other players, this is the first time I’ll be playing Halo ODST. We’re excited to see how well this classic holds up.
