Grizzlies hire MIT women's basketball coach Sonia Raman as assistant coach
With their first female assistant coach in franchise history off to another job, the Memphis Grizzlies are bringing another woman onto their coaching staff.
The Grizzlies announced Friday they had hired MIT head women’s basketball coach Sonia Raman as an assistant:
“We are beyond excited to welcome Sonia to the Memphis Grizzlies,” said Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins. “She has a high basketball IQ and a tremendous ability to teach the game, as well as a strong passion for the game. She is going to be a great addition to our current coaching staff.”
In 12 seasons at MIT, a Division III program, Raman posted a 152-155 record with two New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference championships with a team that has traditionally struggled in its history. She is MIT’s all-time winningest coach and has twice won NEWMAC Coach of the Year.
Raman’s hiring comes after the departure of Niele Ivey, who made history as the franchise’s first female assistant coach in 2019. Ivey was hired as the head coach of the Notre Dame women’s basketball team in April.
