Grimes has alluded to her personal life hindering her music career, writing in August 2023, "I'm just totally incapable of continuing to pretend that the situation has been remotely ok or that I'm not on my last legs and beyond mentally totally destroyed by what's been going on in my personal life. It's deeply effected my work obviously."

The dispute over their three young children began in September 2023, with Grimes's mother accusing the Tesla billionaire of "withholding" the children and preventing them from visiting their great-grandmother in palliative care. The custody lawsuits the pair filed against one another were ultimately sealed from the public, so their status is unclear.

Yesterday, when another X user asked Grimes why she hadn't made new music, she replied, "Because the threat of losing ur kids while going bankrupt fighting for them is not very conducive to creative thoughts. I just slept and cried every minute I wasn't explicitly fighting for my kids during that year."

Alluding to a potential custody agreement, she continued in another post, "It's my week without my kids so if u wanna get responses from me it's now or every second week after this cuz ... bro i can barely function when I got dependents - mon -> fri every second week - i am available."
