The Great British Bake Off spoilers follow.

The Great British Bake Off was back tonight (September 26) with 12 new contestants hoping to make it to the final. But sadly, we had to say goodbye to the first baker of the series: Amos.

This week was Cake Week, and for the Signature challenge, judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood asked bakers Rowan, Nicky, Dan, Amos, Cristy, Saku, Matty, Dana, Abbi, Josh, Keith and Tasha to make a vertical layer cake.

In a standout moment from the first challenge, Saku admitted that she was nervous — and then received a hug from Paul. "It made my day," she beamed.

Next up was the first Technical challenge of the series, where Paul set the challenge of making the iconic missing raspberry cake from the opening credits of the show.

Dan triumphed in the Technical, placing first and saying "I am pretty much on cloud nine". Meanwhile, Dana came in last place.

Finally, it was time for the Showstopper challenge. New co-host Alison Hammond told the bakers that Paul and Prue wanted them to bake a cake in the shape of an animal.

During the Showstopper, Nicky made a beaver out of cake. This led to a hilarious innuendo from Prue that left the whole tent in a fit of laughter when she said: "So Nicky, tell us about your beaver."

Winning the coveted Star Baker title for the first week was Dan, who called the experience "surreal".

Unfortunately, Amos failed to impress with his collapsing Orca whale cake and was the first baker sent home.

"It was obviously the Showstopper that stopped my show," a tearful Amos said after his elimination.

The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4 in the UK. In the US, it's known as The Great British Baking Show, and streams on Netflix.
