Grant Denyer has revealed his ‘lonely’ reality in the months after being seriously injured in a farming accident.

The Gold Logie winner has made the candid admission in an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle after a ruptured disc resulted in several hospitalisations and ‘lightning pain’.

“It was really lonely and when you’re in that much pain and you’re isolated, it gets tough,” he says.

“There were a few times when the nurse would turn the lights off to go to bed, [and] I’d have a little cry to myself because I wasn’t in a great way.”

Grant’s long road to recovery began in March when he was driving in stakes for new trees on the family’s farm and ruptured a spinal disc, leaving him bedridden.

“It was so painful that it would just knock my legs from under me when I would get a bolt of lightning of pain,” he says of the injury’s effect.

“There are so many nerves in the disc and I just ripped it in half.”

This debilitating reality resulted in a speedy return to hospital after hosting the Dancing with the Stars finale following Grant admitting he attempted to ‘cheat the clock’ in his recovery.

“The problem was I was in an enormous amount of pain so I had to go straight back into hospital for another two weeks to get the pain under control,” he explains.

“I knew I had to take it seriously from that point on, or I could have put the rest of the year in jeopardy.”

The host’s packed schedule meant he was contracted to three jobs at the time of the injury: Dancing With The Stars, 2DayFM Breakfast and fronting new gameshow, Celebrity Name Game.

The latter, which premieres Monday night on Channel 10, marks Grant’s first return to the 6pm time slot since fan favourite Family Feud was axed last year.

“I’m a little bit nervous to be going back into (the time slot) because it’s been a place of such joy for me in the past and led to a Gold Logie,” he said.

“I wouldn’t go back to 6pm unless it was a show that felt like it had all the ingredients and I think this one is funnier than Family Feud.”

However, the debut won’t come without challenges, as Grant battles through the recovery period – which can last up to 12 months.

“I can’t sit yet,” he reveals, adding, “I can only stand or lie down”.

“I do radio standing up, I stand up all day for Celebrity Name Game and I just lie down for a few minutes between shows just to get my back stabilised.”

Grant previously opened up about a dark time following a 2008 injury - something he’s now keen to steer clear of with the support of wife Chezzi and their two young daughters.

“I’m lucky I’ve got the greatest wife in the world who’s shouldered a lot of responsibility through that period. I wasn’t in a great way but I always knew I’d come through it.”
