Gigi Hadid debuts a chic new flicked-out bob
Gigi Hadid is the latest star to go for the chop. The model, who is known for her long, California waves, was seen out in New York yesterday sporting a sleek new bob hairstyle.
The 28-year-old was photographed out in the city wearing a chic monochrome outfit consisting of a classic black blazer, jumper, leggings and loafers, with a pop of white via her ankle socks. She added a pair of staple sunglasses and carried a black handbag.
But while the low-key outfit was undeniably chic, it was her new haircut that was the star of the show. The model showcased a sleek, side-parted bob that was gently flicked out at the ends.
Just last week, Hadid was seen in Paris – where she appeared on the catwalk for Chanel and Miu Miu – with a waist-grazing, swishing ponytail. While she has experimented with shorter hairstyles in the past, she has consistently stuck to her classic long lengths for the past few years.
The luxurious-feeling 'old-money bob' has become popular of late – as showcased by Zendaya, Maude Apatow and, most recently, Sydney Sweeney – seen as a signifier of sophistication; the 'quiet luxury' of hair. However, Hadid's version feels fresher and more modern, more in line with the fun, 'flippy' styles that gained prominence last year.
"Flippy ends have had a real resurgence," one of London’s leading hairstylists, Larry King, confirmed to Bazaar last year, explaining that "it takes inspiration from the Sixties". Think The Queen’s Gambit – “but with a more modern, smoothed-down finish and just a little lift at the crown”. (Side note: try this trick to achieve crown lift, which makes any hairstyle more flattering.)
King says that the hair flip is perfect for anyone in the bob and middy-length camp and that, mercifully, the style is more low-maintenance than it looks. “It works well with anything jaw- to shoulder-length and doesn’t take on the huge commitment of a different cut; it's just a simple styling trick that can change things up to look really new.”
