Model Gigi Hadid has issued an apology after fans accused her of donning ‘blackface’ on the cover of Vogue Italia’s new issue.

Taking to Twitter, the 23-year-old has issued a statement, in which she says she didn’t have control over the “bronzing and photoshop” executed by the magazine or photographer Steven Klein.

This is a photo of me returning home from shooting my Italian Vogue cover on April 3rd…you can see the level I had been bronzed to on set that day,” reads the beginning of her message.

“Please understand that my control of a shoot 1. is non existent in terms of creative direction. 2. ends completely when I leave set, and anything done to a photo in post if out of my control fully.

“The bronzing and photoshop is a style that S. Klein has done for many years and I believe was what was expected from the shoot (to show me in a different way creatively), BUT, although I understand what Vogue Italia’s intentions were, it was not executed correctly, and the concerns that have been brought up are valid.”

Gigi goes on to emphasise to her followers “that things would have been different if my control of the situation was different”.

“There are real issues regarding representation in fashion—it’s our responsibility to acknowledge those issues and communicate through them to work towards a more diverse industry,” she adds.

The magazine cover in question shows the sister of fellow model Bella Hadid sporting a more bronzed complexion than usual, while posing with a male model.

Fans had been quick to comment on the fashion spread, with one writing: “Completely different person; she looks like a completely different race”.

Another blackface attempt failing miserably,” read another tweet.

This is not the first time a Vogue Italia shoot with Gigi has come under fire.

Back in 2015 the magazine was accused of cultural appropriation when the model appeared on the cover wearing an afro-style blue wig.
