Giants, Jets to play without fans at MetLife Stadium under governor's new order

While states work out whether fans can be in the stands, the New York Giants and New York Jets already know.

There won’t be any fans allowed at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey under Gov. Phil Murphy’s order restricting public gatherings. The Giants and Jets put out a statement acknowledging there will be no fans at their games until circumstances change.

Other teams will be finding out if fans are allowed, and how many, as the season draws closer.

Giants, Jets to play without fans

The Giants and Jets put out a joint statement on the order and what it means to them, acknowledging that there will be no fans at their games until further notice.

Playing without fans is part of sports’ 2020 reality. Soccer leagues like the English Premier League have done it. MLB is prepared to do the same. The NBA won’t have fans in its Orlando bubble.

Now we know the Jets and Giants, at least, will be playing home games in front of empty stadiums.

How will games change without fans?

There’s no way to know how games without fans will affect teams. The differences between states could affect home-field advantage. There have been some theories among players how the games themselves will change with no crowd noise.

Other teams are coming to grips with the fact they might not have any fans in attendance. The Las Vegas Raiders are aware that it’s unlikely they have fans in their brand new Allegiant Stadium. Other states could allow limited capacity.

The NFL season will be an unprecedented one, if it happens on time. Being in an empty stadium is just one of the adjustments.
