Yahoo Lifestyle Giants infielder Pablo Sandoval wears mask while playing in the field
Pablo Sandoval got the memo on face masks and their impact on mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
The San Francisco Giants first baseman wore one during Thursday’s opening day game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. And not just in the dugout or for introductions. Sandoval wore his while playing in the field.
Several players were seen sporting masks during pregame ceremonies and in the dugout. But of all the players to take the field during the Giants-Dodgers game and the earlier matchup between the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals, only Sandoval wore his while actually playing baseball.
He dropped his mask below his chin when he took the plate.
It was a throwback to the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic where baseball players regularly wore masks while playing.
Masks will help contain the pandemic
Scientific studies make it clear that a collective effort to wear masks slows the transmission of the coronavirus and would help bring the pandemic under control. Some studies suggest that they also protect the mask wearer from contracting the coronavirus. There is no health threat posed by wearing a mask.
Sandoval is setting public health example for all Americans tuning into baseball for the first time since last fall.
