A humongous 3D cat is turning heads on a busy Tokyo street. The huge feline, nicknamed “Shinjuku Cat,” is a part of a billboard campaign.

Shinjuku Cat gets its name from the Shinjuku district it hails from. The cat resides on a 1,665 square-foot, curved LED 4K high-resolution display. What’s fascinating about Shinjuku is that it’s more than just a static projection. The calico cat, which looks comfortably nestled on top of a building, walks around, naps and loudly meows.

Footage of the giant kitty went viral on Twitter on July 5, receiving over 142,000 likes. Shinjuku is active from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m. before taking a six-hour “cat nap.” Cross Space and Unika created the project, and technically, Shinjuku isn’t advertising anything besides the advertising space itself.
The two companies use the gigantic feline to promote the high-tech 3D ad space called “Cross Shinjuku Vision.” Nevertheless, picking something that would warm people’s hearts was intentional.
“There are many reasons we decided to display the cat, but one of the big reasons is that with [the] corona[virus], the world became very dark,” Unika spokesperson Takayuki Ohkawa told Japan Times. “Through the cat display, we wanted to revive Shinjuku and make it brighter.”
Tokyo will host the 2021 Summer Olympics but is currently under its fourth pandemic lockdown. The approximate 190,000 daily passersby could certainly use some cheering up.
“The way it was meowing was too cute to bear,” a pedestrian who spotted the cat, Ryoko Kikuchi, told Japan Times.
