Ghost of Tsushima is getting a free multiplayer update

The hit samurai game Ghost of Tsushima is getting a multiplayer mode for free.

On August 17, Sucker Punch Productions announced Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new co-op mode with four original characters and a setting heavily inspired by Japanese mythology.

When Ghost of Tsushima released in July 2020, it was received with almost universal acclaim by critics and fans. Even Famitsu, a Japanese gaming publication famous for its harsh scoring system, gave it a perfect score. This makes Ghost of Tsushima the third video game from a western studio to receive the coveted 40/40 in Famitsu’s entire history (the publication was founded in 1984).

Sucker Punch has always billed Ghost of Tsushima as a single-player experience, but given that the Legends DLC was announced just a month after the game’s release, the studio has been diligently working on this DLC for a long time.

Legends also seems like an opportunity for Sucker Punch to flex its creative muscles. Whereas the base game features samurai-turned-vigilante Jin Sakai defending his home island of Tsushima against the Mongol invasion in 1274, Legends throws off any pretense of historicity in favor of fantasy.

Instead, Legends features a dark spirit realm with floating corpses and demonic foes. Players can choose to take on the role of the Samurai, the Ronin, the Hunter or the Assassin who are all “built up as legends in stories told by the people of Tsushima,” game designer Darren Bridges said in a post.

Upon launch, players can jump straight into either the Story missions or the Survival missions. Raid mode will be added later to Legends later on.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is planned to release sometime in the fall or winter of 2020.
