Woman sues boyfriend for not proposing after eight years together
A woman is suing her partner for “wasting her time” and not marrying her, despite the fact they have been together for eight years and share a child together.
Gertrude Ngoma, from Zambia, has reportedly taken her boyfriend to court after discovering he was cheating on her, making her doubt his loyalty.
Local news outlet Tuko reported the 26-year-old woman and the child were still living with her parents, while her partner Herbert Salaliki, 28, lived separately.
It is custom in Zambia for men to pay a dowry - called lobola or an ‘appreciation fee’ - to the family of their future bride, which is meant as a sign he plans to look after her.
Gertrude told the court her boyfriend had paid the dowry and promised to marry her - but had never proposed.

“He has never been serious, that is why I bought him to court because I deserve to know the way forward and our future,” she told the court.
Her partner Herbert told the court he wasn’t in a financial position to afford a wedding, and in the end the judge said there wasn’t really anything the court could do.
The judge recommended the couple try and reconcile things outside of the courtroom.
