How did George Strait become famous?
Strait grew up on a cattle ranch in Pearsall, Texas, raised by his single father after his parents divorced. He was an active rancher and graduated with an agriculture degree from what was then Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University).
After college, Strait joined the Army and was stationed in Hawaii during the Vietnam War. During his downtime, The New Yorker reports, he began playing guitar—and it stuck. He joined the Ace in the Hole Band in the late 1970s with Mike Daily, who's still in his band today. He soon traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, and in 1981, got signed and released his debut single, "Unwound," followed by his first album, Strait Country.
In 1982, Strait released his second album, Strait From the Heart, and got his first No. 1 single with "Fool Hearted Memory." It's only been up from there: Strait became a heartthrob in the country community among female fans and was marketed as a genuine cowboy to audiences. He even starred in a movie, Pure Country, in an effort to follow Elvis Presley's trajectory from music star to pop culture icon.
Long story short: It worked, and he's been topping the charts and making history ever since.

Why is George Strait so rich?
Simply put, the man sells a lot of records and concert tickets. He's one of the bestselling artists of all time around the world, but especially in the United States. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Strait is the 12th highest selling artist ever in the U.S., selling 70 million records domestically alone (and more than 120 million globally). Strait has 20 multi-platinum albums (selling 2 million copies or more), 33 platinum albums (selling 1 million copies or more) and 24 gold albums (selling 500,000 copies or more).
Strait holds the record for the most No. 1 albums in country music history, and he's bested only by Presley and The Beatles in terms of the most No. 1 albums in music history. He also has the record for the most No. 1 singles in history across all genres, with 60 (and counting).
