George Clooney has hit out at the British media, imploring them to treat Meghan Markle more kindly going forward.

The actor has spoken about Meghan’s treatment at the hands of British Press, saying a more gentle approach would go a long way.

"I think people should be a little kinder,” he told The Associated Press. “She's a young woman who just had a baby, you know?"

Speaking at the premiere of his new series Catch-22, which premieres later this month, the actor conceded that royal life comes with necessary public attention, but argued the methods employed should tow a more rigid line.

“(A public life) if you’re a royal is in part what you have to do, but going to interview people’s parents and stuff like that, it starts to step into a really dark place,” he said referring to press interviews with Meghan’s estranged family.

He also shut down speculation that he was in the running to be a royal godfather on Jimmy Kimmel Live, saying his recent arrivals were keeping him too busy.

"That would be a bad idea,” he said. “I shouldn't be the (godfather). I'm a father of twins I can barely do that."

Asked if he would turn down the role if it was offered to him, the 58-year-old was firm: "I'm not going to be the godfather. I promise you that. I'm fairly sure."

The Hollywood star and his wife Amal Clooney are known to be close friends of Harry and Meghan, and attended their wedding last year.

Amal was also a guest at Meghan’s New York baby shower, and the couple have been known to holiday with the Duke and Duchess.

Clooney has come to the Duchess’ defence in the past, earlier this year he vented his frustration at Meghan’s public portrayal.

At the time he compared her treatment to that of Diana, warning, “we’ve seen how that ends.”

The actor is famous for speaking his mind publicly.

Last month he called for a boycott of a luxury hotel chain owned by the Sultan of Brunei, after the monarch’s country introduced the death penalty for ‘homosexual acts’.
