Friends actor's cause of death revealed: 'Devastating'

Friends actor Mike Hagerty has died aged 67 after having a tragic reaction to an antibiotic he was taking for a leg infection.

Known for his role in the hit series as the superintendent at the Friends main apartment building, sources told TMZ the antibiotic caused the actor to suffer a seizure and slip into a coma before he died on May 5.

The source added he was soon due to start filming the second season of Somebody Somewhere when his energy levels dipped as he was still recovering from the leg infection he contracted in April.

His co-star Bridget Everett also revealed the sad news in a tribute posted to Instagram.

"A beloved character actor, his love of his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life. Mike, a devoted husband, is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, his sister Mary Ann Hagerty, her wife Kathleen O’Rourke, and their daughter Meg. He will be sorely missed," she wrote.

In another post, Bridget detailed their first meeting.

"I loved Mike the instant I. met him. He was so special. Warm, funny, never met a stranger. We are devastated he has passed. Mike was adored by the entire cast and crew of Somebody Somewhere. Our thoughts are with his wife and family," she wrote.

Fans left their own tributes for Mike on Bridgett's Instagram post, with many acknowledging his talent.

"This is devastating. He was so brilliant," one said.

"Each person in your cast has unique gifts. I was drawn to Mike immediately. You can 'act' some of that, but his own sweet soul seeped through. Such a heartbreaking loss for you, his Somebody Somewhere family and mostly his beloved wife and family. You are blessed with a brilliant cast, but Mike’s absence will be felt," another said.

Mike appeared in five episodes of the hit series Friends as Mr Treeger, and is mentioned in the final episode of the series when Monica tells the gang to leave their keys for him.

Mike also starred in an episode of Seinfeld, Cheers, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Desperate Housewives, and three episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
