MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia has suffered "multiple contusions" but avoided any fractures in a shocking crash at the Catalunya Grand Prix.

Five riders were involved in an incident at the first corner before the Italian, who was on pole, lost control of his Ducati and came off his bike.

Brad Binder was then unable to avoid running over Bagnaia's legs.

The race was red-flagged and medics attended to Bagnaia on the track before he was taken away by ambulance.

Ducati said Bagnaia "has sustained multiple contusions, but further medical checks have shown no fractures" and he will now fly to Italy with the team.

Earlier, team-mate Enea Bastianini slipped at the first corner, taking out Marco Bezzechi, Johann Zarco, Fabio di Giannantonio and Alex Marquez, before Bagnaia - who leads this year's title race - crashed at the second.

MotoGP said all six riders, including Bagnaia, were conscious, and that he and Bastianini "will both go to the hospital for further checks".

Ducati team-mate Bastianini will have surgery on his hand and ankle.

The team said he suffered a "non-displaced fracture of the medial malleolus of the left ankle and a sub-capital fracture of the second metacarpal of his left hand. Both his hand and ankle have been immobilised with plaster to enable him to travel to Italy tonight.

"Bastianini will require surgery on his ankle and, to speed up his recovery, he will also undergo surgery on his hand in the following days."

Aleix Espargaro, who had won the sprint race on Saturday, also won the main race, with his Aprilia team-mate Maverick Vinales in second and Jorge Martin in third.

"This win is for Pecco," Espargaro said after his victory.
