In an intimates world full of lacy thongs and skin-tight shaping panties, I just wanted to be comfortable.

A couple of years ago, I decided to make a change to my underwear drawer in pursuit of comfort, switching out my unpleasant undies for something more pleasing. I had spent my teen years and early 20s prioritizing “sexiness” when it came to undergarments. Even as a queer woman, I wasn’t immune to the pressures of an intimates industry that caters to men’s desire and dismisses women’s comfort. And I was sick of it.

After trialing and testing brands big and small, I finally found my own personal underwear holy grail. How I came across Knickey is still a mystery to me, but my butt has been a lot happier since then.

Knickey is a women-owned organic cotton underwear brand that sells four styles of simplistic undies in five neutral tones. The low impact, eco-friendly brand uses textiles and dyes that are certified to be chemical and toxin-free. And they even get softer with each wash.

The brand writes on its website, “Around the world, about 300 million women suffer from yeast, vaginal, and bladder infections each year — in part due to the synthetic fabrics that don’t breathe and harmful chemicals found in our undergarments and feminine care products.”

The brand describes its undies as “gentle,” “breathable” and “wearable.” That’s mainly due to the brand’s use of organic cotton, which they insist is more than just a buzzword.

Knickey is truly invested in sustainable, eco-friendly materials, like organic cotton, to have a minimal impact on the environment. The brand also takes ethical production seriously, prioritizing safe, supportive labor conditions and fair wages.

When cleaning out your underwear drawer, you will no doubt find hole-filled undies that have seen better days. The majority of these past-their-prime intimates go to landfills, where they can have an adverse impact on the environment. To help curb that, Knickey allows you to send in old intimates to recycle. The textiles are then turned into new materials like insulation and mattress batting.

The underwear comes in low-rise thong, low-rise bikini, mid-rise hipster and high-rise brief, which is my personal favorite. The underwear is sized XS to XL and cost $13 apiece, with discounts applied when you buy a bundle of three, five, 10 or 20. All the styles have hundreds of 5-star reviews on the Knickey website, with buyers calling them “comfy,” “soft” and, yes, even “sexy.”
