Why food gets Aussies in the mood

Lifting the lid on the seductive powers of cooking, the Electrolux Passion for Food Survey, reveals Australians believe a home cooked meal (53%) is the best way to get in the mood for an intimate night in, above foot massages (32%), sharing a few drinks (40%) and surprise gifts (38%).

Relationships expert Emma Merkas says, “A good home cooked meal has long been recognised as a powerful aphrodisiac and there is little doubt that the recent resurgence in home cooking is helping to spice up relationships across the country.”

“The average couple spends about two hours together each day and one third of that is spent watching TV. Getting into the kitchen to prepare a meal together is a wonderful way of being productive and catching up on quality time... and of course, may lead to one of those 'intimate moments' that so many Australians are reporting.”

“While it’s no surprise that newlyweds rule the roost when it comes to kitchen affection, the Electrolux Passion for Food Survey shows one third of established couples (15 years and more) are still finding the time to get amorous while preparing a meal – which is great to see.”

Additionally, an overwhelming nine in 10 Australians confirm the ability to cook a good meal is an important attribute in a partner. Usurping any Stepford Wife notions it’s not just the men who value culinary skills (74%) women also have high expectations in the kitchen with six in 10 wanting a MasterChef man.

Ms Merkas says, “When you cook with passion, you feel passion around you. The aphrodisiac effect is as much about the presentation, tasting and eating of the meal as the body and mind’s physiological reaction to the food.”

Further findings in the report show when it comes to dinner table romancing, the traditional roast (27%) is the go-to favourite, closely followed by seafood (23%) and a juicy steak (14%), while a decadent chocolate pudding was named as the ultimate dessert for a night of loving. Chocolate also succeeded oysters, alcohol and lobster as the leading aphrodisiac for Australian lovers.
