Twelve months ago the fried dough confectionary was a rare and guilty treat you’d eat secretly in your car - now it’s an upscale food trend featured in many of the town’s eateries. Macarons…pft, that was so 2010. We enlisted the eating prowess of Lipstick and Cake blogger Stephanie Stewart, who has undergone months of self-imposed community service, searching far and wide for Sydney’s best doughnuts. Here are her top five finds.

Brewtown Newtons’s doughnuts, beignets and Brewnuts (a doughnut x croissant fusion) are the talk of Sydney. No ordinary doughnuts here, they’re all beautiful presented and decorated with an assortment of sweetness including chocolate icing, salted caramel and candied nuts. Deciding on just one of these delicious treats is near impossible, so be sure to go with friends and share, or take home a doggy bag.

While their mini filled-donuts are heavenly, Devon on Danks Devon’s Cronies (there’s that popular doughnut x croissant hybrid again) are the heroes of the menu. The pork-floss with mayo cronie is a must-try, but get in early as they sell out fast.

Skip dinner and go straight to dessert at Fratelli Paradiso, their custard filled doughnut is the most popular dish on the menu. The soft pillow of goodness is, well, filled with custard, dusted with icing sugar and then topped with another generous dollop of custard.

Two Californian girls have brought the American-style Glazed Doughnuts down under. These hand-made creations are as pretty as they are tasty and can be found in a number of the cafes around Sydney. They also make a regular appearance at the weekend markets including Bondi. Head to their Instagram for updates.

Yep, you heard right. In the bakery section of Woolworths you’ll find the old-school bakery-style doughnut, big and cakey with a thick layer of chocolate, strawberry or caramel icing on top. No hundreds and thousands, but mighty tasty and very filling.
