Flavor Flav Explains Why He Wanted to Pay Olympian Veronica Fraley's Rent: 'I Help People Out' (Exclusive)
The legendary artist tells PEOPLE that "everybody needs a little helping hand sometimes"
Flavor Flav knows that in life, "everybody needs a little helping hand sometimes."
In conversation with PEOPLE discussing his partnership with Smartfood to spread positivity via the brand's new "Flavor You Can Feel Good About" campaign, the artist, 65, opens up about another moment of positivity and kindness he was a part of recently: helping pay the rent of Olympian Veronica Fraley.
On Aug. 1, Fraley, who competed on the U.S. Olympic track and field team at the 2024 Paris Olympics and was a student at Vanderbilt University, posted on X (formerly Twitter), "I compete in the Olympic Games TOMORROW and can’t even pay my rent 😒 my school only sent about 75% of my rent while they pay football players (who haven’t won anything 😂) enough to buy new cars and houses 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾."
In swift response, Flavor Flav took to the platform and wrote, “I gotchu ... DM me and I’ll send payment TODAY so you don’t have to worry bout it TOMORROW ... and imma be rooting for ya tomorrow LETZ GO!!!”
His donation was matched by Alexis Ohanian, who replied, “C’mon now! I’ll split it with @flavorfav” to the rapper on X.
Ohanian later confirmed that he sent Fraley $7,760 on behalf of himself and Flavor Flav in a screenshot shared on X.
Although Flavor Flav admits to PEOPLE he hasn't "even met her yet" in-person, he was still moved to offer some help to the athlete in her time of need, much like he did for the U.S. women's water polo team.
"I'm looking forward to seeing her and meeting her one day," he maintains. "But my main thing was, I mean this girl is out there ... putting her heart and soul into trying to reach her goals and her dreams ... and little hiccups like that can prevent that, that could stop her in her flow. So I didn't want that girl's flow to be stopped. She was on a roll. She was on a roll."
"And I didn't want to see that be disturbed," he continues. "My thing is this, if you can be the person to help out someone, why not? And everything that I've done for people, I look for nothing back, man. The only thing I look for back is for them just to be successful, you know what I'm saying? And to move on with their life."
Flavor Flav notes that his "intention is good. So I help people out from the bottom of my heart."
