“Our Flag Means Death” creator says it's officially the 'end of the road' after show fails to find new home
The pirate series is officially dead in the water.
Our Flag Means Death has raised the white flag.
Following the beloved pirate comedy’s cancellation on Max, creator David Jenkins confirmed that the show has officially come to a conclusion, as his attempt to find a new home for the series (and a fan campaign to save the show) yielded no fruit.
“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road. At least as far as this sweet show is concerned,” Jenkins wrote on Instagram. “After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc it seems there is no alternate home for our crew. Thank you to all of you who sent us out with tremendous love and care. Your campaign was noticed across the industry. But more importantly it made all of us who worked on this show better able to deal with the loss.”
Jenkins went on to thank the show’s fan base for their support and positivity. “To you wonderful fans: thank you. You are lovely and earnest,” he wrote. “Those kinds of things feel in short supply at times. But they aren’t. A love like ours can’t disappear in an instant. When we see each other off in mystic, say hello.”
The showrunner, who also created People of Earth, hinted that some of the Our Flag Means Death cast and crew may collaborate again on a new project in the future “We won’t say goodbye, because we’re not leaving,” he wrote. “We’re just taking a breather until next time we can share something together.”
The queer pirate sitcom, which saw Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi lead a motley crew of gentle seafaring misfits, debuted on Max in 2022, garnering positive reviews and a devoted fan base. The second season premiered in October 2023, and the series was ultimately canceled in January.
