Fear the Walking Dead star Colman Domingo's new Netflix movie Rustin has debuted to an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score.

The historical drama focuses on civil and gay rights activist Bayard Rustin, who was instrumental in organising the March on Washington in 1963.

Directed by George C Wolfe and produced by Barack and Michelle Obama, the film has earned a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes as the first reviews have landed.

The mostly-positive reception has heaped praise on Domingo's performance, though some critics have suggested the film itself doesn't quite live up to the star's acting.

Here's what reviewers have been saying:

"Colman Domingo blows through the title role like a force of nature in Rustin, an exhilarating biographical drama about the highly significant but not widely known civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, whose career and reputation in the 1960s were minimized, at least in part, by his hardly disguised homosexuality."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Wolfe has made an admiring but nuanced feature that doesn’t aim for biopic completism or cause-and-effect formula. And though it doesn’t entirely avoid the awkwardness of explanatory mode, those moments are few, and they dissolve in the dynamic drive of Rustin’s mission to turn his idea for the protest gathering into a reality."

"A compelling look at a lesser-known hero, presenting him not as a figure for sainthood, but as a well-rounded human being whose private life and flaws inform his identity and his accomplishments."

"Domingo rises above the film’s forgettable façade in an unforgettable performance, at ease in his character’s skin and the chirpily talky script by Julian Breece (When They See Us) and Dustin Lance Black (Milk) that manages to keep several threads afloat."

Entertainment Weekly

"The film makes an admirable effort to examine the gap between Rustin's own self-acceptance and the conflict of his determination to not allow that fact to derail the movement to which he has dedicated his life. All in all, though, Rustin is a paint-by-numbers biopic."

"We can appreciate the righteous good of putting something like Rustin into the world at the same time as we lament how sorely the film lacks its namesake’s inspirational flair for defying convention."

Rustin will be released on Netflix on November 17, and will also be released in selected cinemas from November 3.
