Isabelle Cornish on what to wear to the Autumn races

When it comes to getting dolled up for the autumn races what is your style?

I like to keep it quite classic and I’m a sucker for sticking to staples like Black or White and a simple headpiece. However, my favourite look is the 70’s boho vibe - I love floaty dresses and floral patterns. I’m super excited about my outfit this weekend – it’s something very different but sticking to classic colouring.

What fashion risks are OK and what is a no-no?

It’s definitely OK to have a bit of fun with your outfit and experiment with different fabrics and textures. It’s not often you have the opportunity to get all dressed up so my thoughts are that you should always invest in one part of your outfit, and then take a risk with the rest. Your headwear is also a crucial element to any race day outfit, and an easy way to add some excitement to your outfit. This weekend I will be wearing a netting Nerida Winter headpiece to add some intrigue to my outfit.

The biggest no-no at the races, is that you should always wear something you’re comfortable in. Steer clear of anything too tight, and always think comfort first when choosing your shoes. Never wear brand new shoes on a race day!

This look from your Instagram is adorable. Would you make something like this work for the races?

A boho vintage inspired look could definitely work as long as its styled with a classic, classy hair style and a pair of nice heels.

Do you have any favourite brands to wear to Autumn races? Or can we see you riffling through opp shops to find that hidden gem?

I think there are some clear standouts this year, including Self Portrait which is a relatively new brand in Australia. Their ladylike designers are quite different to anything else in the market now, and I love the way their designers incorporate lace and textured fabrics. I also really love Toni Maticevski’s designs as he always uses great, classic fabrics with such flattering silhouettes.

I can’t say I’ve found a races appropriate dress throughout my op shop riffling – I tend to go for cool t-shirts and shift dresses that are probably a little more on the casual side but in saying that – I’d be up for the challenge for sure!!

If racegoers don’t like the idea of fascinators – what would you suggest instead?

In autumn, the focus is really on texture and intricate fabrics. If a fascinator is not your thing, wide brim hats and felt fedoras are very big right now. If you’re looking for something more subtle, that can take you from day to night then try a smaller headband with great detail from designers such as Nerida Winter and Viktoria Novak. One of my favourites this season is a Nerida Winter design, named Zatanna.

Finally, what beauty trends are you looking forward to seeing at this season’s event?

I think a natural bronzed or dewy look is always in, and particularly great to get you through the whole race day without constant retouching. I am currently mad about Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturiser which carries SPF and is a great base for your makeup. I think it’s super important to wear sunscreen under your makeup so you are covered if out on the lawn during the day.

The 2016 Sydney Autumn Carnival is on now until the 16 April across Rosehill Gardens and Royal Randwick. Tickets are available via www.theATC.com.au.
