With awareness around discrimination against transgender people at an all time high, one would think the general public would be more accepting of people who make up the LGTBQ+ community.

But this wasn’t the case when Shadi Petosky booked accommodation on Airbnb and was declined on the basis of being a transgender.

The host in question has since been banned from the site, however, the ban didn’t come about until Shadi publicly called out her discrimination on social media.

In 2015 Shadi, a comic book author and Hollywood producer, tried to book a room on the popular accommodation site and disclosed to the host that she was trans. After being declined for the accommodation, Shadi contacted Airbnb on the grounds of discrimination and claimed they did nothing.

Still unsettled by the event, last week Shadi publicly sent out a tweet with an accompanying screenshot of the conversation with the host

“I was denied @Airbnb because I disclosed that I'm trans. Airbnb did nothing. Had I not disclosed I'd be "dishonest".' It read.

Since being called out publicly on social media Airbnb has banned the host.

In an official statement, Airbnb said: 'Discrimination has no place in the Airbnb community. We have removed this host from Airbnb.'

When asked about why it took Airbnb so long to respond to Ms Petosky, an Airbnb spokesman said: 'We are conducting a comprehensive review and examining what can be done to ensure we resolve these kinds of issues quickly and help make sure everyone is treated fairly.'
